RPI announces the passing of Jack Wilson (Board Member)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Wilson on January 16, 2025. Jack, a cherished friend and a pillar of Refuge Place International (RPI)-Liberia, has transitioned to be with our Lord.
Jack Wilson was more than a supporter; he was a visionary partner and a champion for the dreams of many. Twenty years ago, when the concept for RPI-Liberia was only an idea on paper, Jack embraced it wholeheartedly, declaring with his trademark optimism, "Let's do this." From that moment, his unwavering support shaped the foundation of our work.
Jack’s contributions to RPI-Liberia are immeasurable. He funded crucial projects, including the construction of clinics and two hand pumps in Liberia—his final generous gift. He worked tirelessly to secure and renew our 501(c)(3) status, ensuring our ability to serve vulnerable communities. Even as cancer threatened his health, he remained committed, attending board meetings and celebrating the successes of our shared mission.
Jack’s impact extended far beyond the organization. As a Peace Corps volunteer at Suehn Industrial Mission decades ago, he built a basketball court from forest trees and earthen materials. The team he coached went on to win the national championship—a testament to his resourcefulness and dedication. Jack’s lifelong commitment to Liberia’s growth and progress has left an indelible mark on countless lives.
On a personal level, Jack and his wife, Angene, opened their home, hearts, and resources to support me during my journey. Their generosity and encouragement were steadfast, whether it was helping with my father’s funeral, advocating for my education, or simply sharing meals during Thanksgiving. Jack’s kindness and love were boundless, and his legacy of compassion will forever inspire us.
Jack’s hands of love are everywhere—visible in the solar panels, buildings, and every corner of RPI-Liberia. His memory lives on in the lives of those he touched and the communities he uplifted.
Let us honor Jack Wilson by continuing the work he was so passionate about. May his life remind us all of the power of selfless love and the impact of service to humanity.
Rest in peace, Jack Wilson – even as you and God water the gardens of love in our lives.
It is well! It is well!

Modern Laboratory Project
Refuge Place International is in the final stages of constructing a modern laboratory at its central clinic, located along Somalia Drive in Monrovia, Liberia. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to support smaller clinics in the area by providing advanced laboratory diagnostics and serving as a referral center for comprehensive pathology testing.
Motorbike couriers will collect and deliver samples from these clinics to the central laboratory for analysis. Results will then be transmitted back to clinicians via mobile phones, ensuring timely and efficient communication.
The project serves a dual purpose: improving diagnostic capabilities for smaller clinics and generating minimal fees to help sustain Refuge Place International's network of NGO clinics.
This initiative was driven by the critical need for advanced laboratory testing in the region and the goal of aiding smaller facilities, particularly those around the Chicken Factory area, in delivering reliable diagnostic services.
Once completed, the laboratory will offer an array of essential services, including:
Blood chemistry
Complete blood count (CBC)
Fertility testing
Echocardiogram
Ultrasound
CD4 count
X-ray imaging
Other routine diagnostics
This modern facility will significantly enhance healthcare delivery for the entire community, reinforcing Refuge Place International's commitment to improving lives through accessible and quality medical services. (updated April 8, 2024)
RPI launched its own Eye Clinic
Maintaining proper eye care, preventing avoidable vision loss, and managing age-related eye diseases are essential for improving overall quality of life. However, elderly and vulnerable individuals often face significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to age-related limitations and financial constraints.
Refuge Place International has officially launched its Eye Care Clinic, staffed with an ophthalmic nurse in response to these challenges. This clinic, owned and operated by Refuge Place International, aims to provide comprehensive eye care services to the elderly, students, and other vulnerable populations, ensuring improved access to essential eye health services. RPI is building two new clinics
RPI's Co-Investment initiative is designed to support the achievement of Universal Health Coverage by fostering community collaboration. Under this model, rural community members contribute labor and local materials, while RPI provides modern materials such as zinc and nails, professional construction workers, rented power saws, and food for the villagers.
This partnership enables the construction of cost-effective clinics, hand pumps, and soon, latrines. Currently, the organization is nearing the completion of its 4th and 5th clinics. The facility in Rural Montserrado (Arthington Back Bush) is 80% complete, while the clinic in Bong County (Velenga) is expected to be dedicated soon. Together, these facilities will serve an estimated 10,000 people, significantly improving access to essential healthcare in these rural communities. (updated April 8, 2024)
